Walking was never a big thing in my life (I’m naturally lazy) but apparently it helps the heart pump etc, so it’s healthy! My attitude use to be why walk when you have a car!!

The thing is I really do enjoy strolling and over the years I’ve noticed that my daughter loves to walk with me (I am the lukiest father alive). We are lucky that there are some wonderful parks and forests not to far from us.

It gives us both an opportunity to reflect and talk to each other on a very special level.

This weekend caught me out somewhat, I was ready for the clocks going forward but my body clock wanted to defer, probably till it had its fourth cup of coffee.

On Sunday the weather was truly summery, and we took the opportunity to get outside. We decided to go to one of our favourite haunts, a place called Fairlop waters. The central theme is a man made lake that takes about an hour and a half to go around. For all the activity that goes on there it is still very peaceful. When we arrived and to our horror the constuction compnay were all over the place. Whatever it was they were doing I hope they have it completed in time for summer. Some of the areas were still open but we couldn't get all the way around the lake, but we did make the most of it and a great day was had.

When the sun hid behind a cloud it was still a bit nippy, but generally it was great.

Getting ready to leave ... yeah right! I dare you to come near me!

When the sun went in it was 'jackets up to the top'!!

JJ wanted to be in on the fun too .. can you do that with your tongue?!! lol

Last night’s dream

11:37 Mar 26 2009

I have had thoughts about someone, someone I shouldn’t have, all good thoughts …..

I’m scared of the unknown, of things that I can’t control. I hate it when my emotions just randomly respond or react to ‘situations’. I push people out of my life because … well because I’m scared.

I hate that I’m stubborn beyond belief. I have principals. I stand by my principals. I do apologise if I ‘hurt’ unintentionally, I readily admit my mistakes and am humbled my many. I’m human.

I debated long and hard about adding this post …. Why? Because I’m scared, I’m a coward!

I had a dream last night. The person in the dream I was once ‘involved’ with. The dream involved both of us holding each other and kissing, it was passionate but only kissing. The general feeling was that it was wrong but we couldn’t help ourselves.

It’s obvious my subconscious was thinking about her.

Here’s the thing, me being me meant that I had every excuse in the book that would say it meant nothing … nothing at all!

Yesterday, some friends and I were just chatting about naming ‘sets’ of things. The seven Dwarfs was one and I am happy to have got them all correct. Another was the Ten Commandments, I really struggled, forget that it was never going to be the right order ….

This got me thinking, I wonder if the Ten Commandments (as we know them) would have been written differently or at least prioritised differently. Society seems to have become more accepting of the ‘lesser’ crimes and has even outdone itself by introducing new and even more horrid atrocities where children and animals are concerned.

For someone looking for ethical bases, yes, the Ten Commandments are the right address to start (don't forget to look into the other 603 commandments, too), though several of them do not seem relevant for someone who considers himself an atheist. How do you relate to "I am the Lord, your G-d" (Commandment #1), or "Have no other gods" (#2), "Do not take My Name in vain" (#3), and "Remember the Sabbath to sanctify it" (#4)? That leaves only six commandments for an ethical base!

If a person does not consider the first four to be absolutes, why should he accept the latter six as truths. If a person chooses which commandments suit his beliefs, he may one day choose to delete any of the remaining six. Unfortunately, history and current events demonstrate how sophisticated people and governments violate basic human rights in the name of their justified goodness. Their own "ethical base" may displace any of the commandments leading to genocides, lootings, anarchy, etc.

First, even though there are indeed 613 Commandments pretty much all of them can be placed under the well known "10", as can most sins.

Second, should someone be an atheist then in reality no Commandments really matter because your only reference point for ethics is your own ideas and the society around you in general. History has taught us that society is far from being a good ethical barometer.

BLOODLIFE
BLOODLIFE
13:33 Mar 22 2009

Ethics become relative, if not random, due to the subjective understanding of each individual. Actually, it is not a base at all, since the word 'base' denotes solid stability. The commandments are reduced to suggestions, allowing every person to select the ones he finds appropriate, and this selection is subject to revision. Without believing in G-d, there is no ethical base, since it is neither constant nor consistent.

For an ethical base to be real, it must have a firm foundation in G-d. When we believe these commandments are divinely given we will not violate or alter them. As absolute truths, the commandments make us accountable for our actions, and responsible to teach them to others. G-d taught how to understand each of the commandments, so there could be clarity and unity among us. G-d is our base, and His commandments are our ethics.

Under the Voodoo spell.....

New Orleans has always been held in quiet admiration for me. From what I have seen in films and the way I have heard it described has only lead to my increased wonderment over the years.

I loved the way Ann Rice has described the older parts of ‘Orleans in her books and I have met a few people from that part of the world and smiled at their accents. I have even read journals and profiles on here describing this remarkable place. I even call a few people who hail from their ‘friends’.

I have done my fair share of visiting The States but New Orleans has always managed to have evaded me. I was upset that I couldn’t make the VR meet up last year only to find myself a State away a few months later.

The French influence mixed with the Spanish is so prevalent; in fact it’s probably one of the last bastillions where these two cultures actually get along so well.

My thoughts of the beautiful Cajun women and Creole recipes really grab my imagination, again, I owe a lot of that to the Ann Rice novels.

I now fear that if I do get out there it may spoil my illusion of this wonderful place. Should I leave it be and carry my own beautiful depiction of this place with me. We shall see.

I just snapped this picture; it’s hard not to add them to my history/geography section .. lol

Moon River

Normally St.Pats night would be the same as any other night, especially since it was in the week.

I had a phone call around 7ish … not to ask “would you like to…”, but to tell me to be ready to go out at 8ish ….. there’s always an ‘ish’ with my lot.

Sure enough at 8ish in they poured, three shes and two hes. I was gate crashed.

I love it when the girls turn up, they first check the kitchen for any washing up, I should think about renting them out. Lol. It’s a pleasure to see Lyn (dressed in a silver sequined cocktail dress, the type that you have to paint on) go to work in my kitchen. I think she does it out of habit as my new kitchen is tiny compared to my last and is relatively tidy.

The day had been glorious with real warm sunshine but the evening still carried a chill, the remnants of winter, more so since there was no cloud cover at all.

So six of us meant two cars, or one taxi. Yep, I got to drive the taxi again. The manoeuvrability of the London black cab is legendry and a pleasure to drive compared to it earlier predecessors.

The destination was a casino on the beach.

Because we were all members and it was a Tuesday there were discounts galore flying around, it made for a good fun evening that’s very reasonable.

None of us were really gamblers but they do have a great bar and restaurant with live music. The norm would be that after dinner the girls would play the tables whilst the guys would park their butts in the lounge to watch the sport.

After dinner I decided to have a smoke. You can’t smoke in any public building these days so I decided to go outside and sit on the sea wall.

As I was getting comfy I noticed that the sea was illuminated by the moon. The moon was enormous. It shone down gently caressing the sea’s ripples. I had images of Audrey Hepburn singing Moon River from Breakfast at Tiffany’s………

“Moon River, wider than a mile,

I'm crossing you in style some day.

Oh, dream maker, you heart breaker,

wherever you're going I'm going your way.

Two drifters off to see the world.

There's such a lot of world to see.

We're after the same rainbow's end--

waiting 'round the bend,

my huckleberry friend,

Moon River and me.”

St. Patrick

My daughter currently goes to a school called St. Patrick's ....

Last night I spoke to her on the phone as she wanted to tell me that tomorrow the school is having a 'dress down' day. She went on to explain that it means you can either wear your school uniform or 'GREEN'...

I said that sounds 'cool' (wanting to sound hip).

''But dad...'' she says .... ''Green is sooo not me''

I had to laugh, to think my daughter has a sense of fashion at the age of ten! Watch out Gucci and Jean Paul Gaultier ... "Princess coming through"

My daughter is growing so damn fast. She's now up to my shoulder (I'm no giant, but still). I have decided to leave buying her new school uniform till after the summer in case she's grown out of it by then.

Spring has really moved in quite fast here, I just hope it's not gonna disappear next week.

Plans are now underway with my friends in Spain for some meet ups again, in fact two of the guys are already out there.

Here's a shot of the sea from the top of my street, taken today, that really is the sun glistening on the waves. Sorry it's poor quailty as it was taken with my phone.

Red Nose Day

My daughter’s school ran a competition for ‘Red Nose Day’; it’s an annual event by which people collect money for charity.

For more info just go here ...

http://www.rednoseday.com/about_rnd

Current total collected .. £57,809,938. and it's not over yet!!

These millions prove to me that there is still hope in our world.

Anyway my daughter and a few of her friends wanted to do something. I liked that they wanted to do something for this great event as so many charities benefit.

All week they had been collecting money by doing various fund raising things.

They managed to collect £273.00 which got rounded up to £300.00 ($600.00 give or take).

The school on the whole collected £4,500.00. This was just six classes. Her group was the highest group to collect the most. She took no prisoners as she diligently approached all of her family and our friends.

Just when I think she does me proud … she shines.

Hang on dad, nearly ready..

There ya go...

Incoherent Ramblings

When does letting go become just as hard as holding on? Why do the words 'moving on' sound as negative as 'standing still'?

Aren't tears of laughter just as wet as tears of joy?

We all follow a path by virture that we wake up every morning. The direction of that path is guided by our actions. Should we do something or not? Should we say something or not? Should we just do nothing?

The realisation that something has come to an end, finally! Be it a friendship or a coffee jar. If only friendships were as convenient as shopping for coffee! Looking at that empty coffee jar and scraping the sides to just get 'that' one more cup ... just one more, always just one more ... once more. Is it worth it? Was it ever worth it?

I once asked the question, "when do we know when enough is enough?" The sad fact is we don't! Well not in the natural sense.

I have watched the human race in quiet awe, people are fascinating, I love people. Some have become part of me and are what can be coinsidered second nature to me now.

I am not particularly religious, I do have strong moral values, and I do have a 'bind' with my religion but that is more to do with identity than religion.

Just lately I find myself praying more and more. These prays are not just for other people but they also give me a sense of 'being'. The beauty of prayer is that it doesn't matter who or what you pray for, it's the act and the fact that you believe unconditionally.

You know, just sometimes letting go is the answer. Jumping without a safety net ... go for it.

WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOO

My daughter starts BIG school this September.

So the hunt was on for a school. I am no different to most parents and only wanted the best education for her. It was a time when my ex and myself behaved like we were a team again.

We tried to get her into ‘King David’, it’s an excellent school with a high rate of achievers. Being a Jewish school I pulled out every connection I could to get us an interview. At the interview I knew we failed when the panel asked to see our marriage certificate. Not only were we not married in a synagogue but my ex isn’t even Jewish.

The disappointing news came through the post a few days later, they never said it was because of that but I know better.

The race was on, I needed to speak with my other contacts, this time coming from the church. Talk about extremes.

To cut a very long story short, my daughter passed the entrance exam to Brentwood Ursulaine Covent High School. This school is not only the best in the county but is ranked in the top 5 in the country.

I am so damn proud, this weekend we celebrate … mum too!
